The village of Kilpisjärvi is located quite far north in Finland, at the end of the Finnish “arm” that stretches towards the Arctic Sea but doesn’t quite reach it. In between are the high Norwegian Alps, which keep their snow caps even in summer. It is bordered by a deep clearwater lake on one side and vast uninhabited wilderness on the other. Kilpisjärvi is the gateway to the magnificent landscapes and the rich culture and intriguing history of three countries: Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Kilpisjärvi is a Sámi region and as such the right place to learn about the Sámi people. The Sámi people have a nomadic background. They are reindeer herders. Reindeer eat lichen in winter and three kinds of green plants in summer. Even today, the basic elements of Lappish nature are strongly determining factors in the Sámi lifestyle: wind, reindeer, time, fire, and the human being.

Finnish Lapland is also reindeer land. There are 200,000 reindeer wandering around Lapland. But you don’t even have to go to the forest to see reindeer — you can find them right in the villages.

After breakfast, we will drive forward to Kilpisjärvi (around 5–6 hrs), with a lunch stop on the way.

Chasing Northern Lights

Different cultural groups, from New Zealand Maoris to Indians, Inuits, and Sámi people in the north, have their own myths. Sámi folklore says the auroras are caused by a running fox whipping up snow with its tail and sending sparks into the sky.

Science says the lights are caused by electronic particles from the sun entering the atmosphere. They collide with each other, which makes them shine in colours, mostly green.

Whatever the reason, these dancing lights are magic. Wait until you see them yourself.

Arrival in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, called the “Bay of Smokes.” It is the site of the island’s first farmstead and is a thriving, handsome, and cosmopolitan city.

Iceland is an island nation in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America. It is situated in a strategic location between North America and Europe, about 840 km northwest of the United Kingdom and about 460 km southeast of Greenland’s coast. The closest European land is the Faroe Islands (530 km).

The island lies just south of the Arctic Circle at the northern end of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), where the tectonic plate of Eurasia meets the North American Plate, causing a lot of volcanic activity in the region. Iceland’s extraordinary landscape offers hot springs, geysers, icefields, volcanoes, glaciers, and wild waterfalls.

Iceland has 30 active volcanic systems, of which 13 have erupted since the settlement of the island in AD 874. Only about 20 percent of the country is habitable. With an area of 103,000 km², Iceland is more than twice the size of Denmark. The population is 384,000, making it the least densely populated country in Europe (besides Greenland, which is not part of Europe). The spoken language is Icelandic, one of the North Germanic languages.
